Adapting and coping is one of the Great Eight competencies. According to Talent Select AI, someone who adapts and copes responds effectively to change, and skillfully manages pressure and stressors.

From the Big Five Personality Traits (OCEAN) lens, psychologist David Bartram states that an adapting and coping personality type is emotionally stable, manages pressure effectively, and copes well with setbacks.

Adapting and Coping in the Workplace

Adaptability is among the top five soft skills employers look for in job candidates. In the workplace, someone who can effectively adapt and cope is cross-culturally aware, deals well with ambiguity, shows emotional self-control in high-stakes situations, balances work and life, maintains a positive outlook, and handles criticism.

A change in routine or new protocol does not unmoor the adaptable personality. Their grounded disposition makes them great candidates for temp work, startups, and mid-level management positions, which demand adherence to shifting roles and rules. 

Adaptable people are solid anchors for the rest of their team, who might otherwise find a sudden change disruptive and inhibit their productivity. Either way, their willingness to accept and embrace change can set an example to follow and boost morale. 

Notably, the adaptable, emotionally stable personality is less likely to continue investing in a failing project simply because it’s familiar, potentially saving the company time, expense, and mismanagement of resources. 

Is Adapting and Coping a Learnable Trait?

Adaptability skills are a type of soft skill, meaning they reflect how a person works and interacts with others in the workplace. Adapting and coping behaviors are generally developed unconsciously and learned early. People learn these skills through both observation and direct teaching.

A few adaptability skills include communication, quick learning, organization, and critical thinking. Practicing adaptability may consist of how someone can respond to change in the workplace, including new managers or co-workers, a shift in work priorities, and an increase in weekly meetings.
